If you’re looking for something totally different to do, join us for Kirtan, a communal, musical experience that will lift you up spiritually.
Mystical Kirtan led by singer/songwriter Mirabai Moon is a call-and-response style concert with songs and chants. The Sanskrit word kirtan is translated as “to repeat” and “to praise that which is exalted.”
All Yoga practices eventually point to the awakening of the heart. Kirtan, a Bhakti yoga practice, can take you directly there. It is considered one of the fastest ways to tap into pure joy and love and to experience divine bliss.
In a Kirtan, people come together to sing, dance and make music. One person leads the group in chanting back and forth, and it becomes an intimate exchange between the leader and the group where you can listen, then sing, listen, then sing. The repetition of the chant creates the most sublime meditation and inner sweetness.
And the best part is that anyone can do it. No experience is required! Join us for a night of bliss!
As with meditation, the intent of chanting is to calm and focus the mind, relieving it from its usual chatter. With roots in Indian culture and Hinduism, kirtan has grown in popularity in the United States, particularly at yoga centers.
Participants call the kirtan spiritually satisfying and emotionally energizing, a Washington Post article said.
Mirabai Moon’s expressive voice has been compared to Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and even mantra artist Deva Premal. Her music takes listeners on a journey, flowing effortlessly from ethereal dreaminess to soulful blues and jazz.
The event takes place from 7:30-9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. Cost is $20 in advance or $30 at the door. Sign up here.
